The Macao Annual Art Exhibition, held every year during the Macao Arts Festival, has attracted great attention and participation from the local community by adopting a thematic approach and by gathering works in different media. This annual event has become an important platform for fostering Macao’s visual art creations and in training local art talents.

With the “Historic Centre of Macao” successfully inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, Macao has received much approval from around the world for its diversified culture and its openness to different cultures. We can see from recent years’ entries the influence of various cultures, and Macao art works are appraised in both national and international art exhibitions for their outstanding regional characteristics. Many Macao artists have reflected their perspectives on life and everyday issues faced by modern people.

Macao’s cultural diversity is a spring for our city’s development. As well as striving to preserve these precious cultural resources, we should work to generate stronger social awareness and inspiration on spiritual growth, making them the wealth of every Macao resident.

The 2006 Macao Annual Art Exhibition, “Embracing Life and Exhibiting the Contemporary”, acknowledges the hard work of Macao’s art elites, and also provides guidance for other art workers, resulting in a greater concern with current issues and the creation of works of contemporary significance.

The successful organization of this exhibition was made possible in large part by the participation of individuals from the local art community, as well as the support of several exceptional individuals in different countries and regions. I wish to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to this year’s panel – Van Lau, Ruan Yizhong, Zhang Zhi An, Balbir Bodh, Wang Dongling, as well as to all the participants and coordinators.

One must have a good understanding of his/her own traditions and culture before becoming an artist. With Chinese or Western traditional art as the foundation, the artist will then select and combine refined elements of the two cultures to express in his/her works: 1. ethos; 2. style of the era; and 3. personal characteristics. Creativity is the key to success.

Careful observation of the people and things around us is much more important than searching for new ideas within our own knowledge. In this way, we shall have stronger feelings and deeper love for life. Only by walking into the crowd can you enrich the content of life and have never ending ideas for creation. If you only focus on the presentation of art, you will never be able to master “beauty” nor to convey
“goodness”, and your work will lose its “truth”.
Ruan Yizhong
Associate Professor, Taipei National University of the Arts

Selection process was very fair and well organized. Contemporary art required more encouragement, especially in printmaking, sculpture and installation.
Balbir Bodh
Head of Visual Arts, Pathways World School, New Deli, India
Director, Heritage Art Gallery, Colombo, Sri Lanka

By looking at the works, I believe that the artists are savouring life and embracing lots of inspiration and creativity. There are many excellent works in the exhibition. Also, I found it very interesting to express the contemporary with calligraphy. It seems that our fellow calligraphers still lack the courage to explore. I believe that, through the exhibition, we shall work together for improvement.
Wang Dongling
Professor, Department of Calligraphy, China Academy of Art

In recent years, works of different visual art media in Macao have progressed with time, which is a gratifying accomplishment. I hope that our fellow artists in Macao can take a broader view into the world and bring in refined elements of other cultures to create more Macao art works that will bring pride to the people of the area. Macao is advantageous and promising.
