Ceramic art is the quintessence of Chinese culture. During the Ming and the Qing Dynasties, ceramic products were
once an important commodity in the trade between East and West. They were shipped from the port of Macao to Portugal
and then to different parts of the world. Ceramic art is a source of great pride for the Chinese thanks to its fame and
prestige across the world. |

Throughout civilization, people around the world have been drawn to ceramic art. This might have something to do
with our memories of playing with mud on the ground when we were young. The malleability of mud touches the childlike
innocence in our hearts and sparks this primitive form of art creation. Nevertheless, in the modern world, the younger
generations find it more and more difficult to enjoy the fun of this natural and economical plaything. Childhood days have
become dominated by computer games instead. However, ceramic art has become more and more popular, allowing
adults to recall their childhood dreams; it also provides younger people with an opportunity for fun and satisfaction in
creating something tangible. |

Ceramic art seems easy to learn but it is difficult to be good at it. Yet, it is an art with the potential to shape and nurture
a person into an outstanding talent: from moulding to choosing the glaze colours; from preparing the glaze to mouldmaking,
to firing at different temperatures and durations for different outcomes, showing how concrete objects can
express connotations in an abstract way – all these involve knowledge of art, chemistry, physics, ethnology and philosophy.
In this exhibition, we have invited several prominent modern ceramicists from Hong Kong and Macao to display their
works. We have also invited art lovers to present their latest ceramic pieces. Besides promoting the quintessence of
Chinese culture, we also hope that through the exchange of ideas, artists from Hong Kong and Macao will have closer
ties, leading to mutual learning and elevating the level of comtemporary ceramic art. |
