This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Matteo Ricci. The Macao Museum of Art specially organises ‘The Master from the West: An Exhibition Commemorating the 400th Anniversary of the Passing of Matteo Ricci'. The exhibition will be inaugurated on 7th August, the day Ricci first entered Macao.

Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) was not only a renowned Christian missionary of the Jesuit, but also a scholar who mastered the comprehensive knowledge of the Renaissance and the Chinese classics. Besides, he was one of the most significant representatives in facilitating culture exchange between Oriental and Occidental.

Featuring over 180 pieces of art and culture relics from over 30 institutes in Italy, China, Taiwan and Macao, the exhibition presents the immortal legend of a pivotal figure in the history of exchange between China and the West.

Moreover, some world-classed cultural relics will be displayed in this exhibition. For example, the earliest exiting oil-painting in China ‘Portrait of Matteo Ricci' created by Emmanuel Pereira - a painter of Macao in the 17th century; ‘Mysterious Visual Map of the entire World' by Matteo Ricci; and also oil-paintings by Renaissance masters, such as Raphael and Tiziano Vecellio.

World Map by Matteo Ricci
1603

This world map, created by Li Yingshi in 1603, is modeled on the original work of Matteo Ricci. This exceptionally valuable map, which symbolises Matteo Ricci's significance and the success of his cross-cultural mission to China, is one of the few extant copies in the world. Ricci integrated the five-continent division in compiling this map, which laid the foundation for the compilation of world maps in the times of modern China.
